ADDITIONAL INFO:
A single platform serves all traffic in the Gateway Center Station -- the northern end of the "T" system.

The "T" light rail vehicles operate above ground in the South Hills, south of the Monongahela River. After crossing the river and passing the First Avenue Station, the tracks enter a tunnel which is, in part, a rebuilt railroad tunnel. Diverging from the old tunnel at Steel Plaza Station, the subway travels about 35 feet below street level in a cut-and-cover tunnel -- below Sixth Av to the Wood Street Station and then under Liberty Av to Gateway Center.

Heading inbound, the subway track bypasses the Gateway Center station platform and enters a tight radius loop which turns the vehicles around to enter the station in the outbound direction.

The North Shore Connector project (2006-2011) extends the "T" light-rail tracks beyond the Gateway Center station under Stanwix Street, tunneling 66 feet under the Allegheny River, and rising to a subway station near PNC Park. The line then turns west to emerge above ground and end at a station near Heinz Field. Another possible subway spur would have used existing track under the U.S. Steel Tower and near the old Pennsylvania railroad station, traveling under Liberty Avenue to 11th Street and the new convention center.
