ADDITIONAL INFO:

From PA Turnpike Commission press releases:
The 17-mile Interstate 70 to PA Route 51 Project opened on April 12, 2002, creating the longest continuous stretch of the growing Mon/Fayette Expressway and bringing the highway system into Allegheny County for the first time. This 24-mile section of Turnpike 43 extends north from PA Route 88 in Centerville Borough, Washington County to Route 51 in Jefferson Hills Borough, Allegheny County. It includes the six-mile California Toll Road, opened on October 12, 1990; and four miles north from I-70 (Exit 36) to Donora, Charleroi (Exit 39), opened on May 11, 2001.

Total cost for the 17-mile project was approximately $588 million, including $415 million for construction. Construction included 35 million cubic yards of Class I excavation, 13 dual bridges, 60 million pounds of structural steel, 840,000 square yards of concrete pavement, 200,000 square yards of bituminous pavement and $18 million worth of improvements to Route 51 and several intersections in Jefferson Hills.

A 450-space park and ride lot was built in Jefferson Hills for Port Authority of Allegheny County and opened in November 2001. The project also included construction of a one-mile asphalt section of the Montour Trail between Jefferson Hills and South Park Township, and 4.5 acres of replacement wetlands adjacent to the trail and the new extension of Piney Fork Road.
