Christopher Gist; Guyasuta; Joe Magarac*; Jan Volkanik*

* These names have become part of local folklore. Kurt Ruka points out that the sculpture's 1917 installation predates any documented mention of these character names. Folklorists who studied the Magarac legend have traced its origin to a 1931 Scribner's magazine article by Owen Francis. The first appearance of the name Jan Volkanik is reportedly in a Michael Musmanno story of 1934. The HAER documentation describes them as simply a generic mill worker and coal miner.
